The Complete Guide to the Government Green Home Grant - Britmet Lightweight Roofing
UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced a £2bn Green Homes Grant in England for ideal energy-saving home improvements including insulation and double glazing. This new scheme means that the government will pay at least two-thirds of the cost of home improvements that are proven to save energy.
The improvements that could save you the most energy depend on your home, but typical examples include:
- Insulation (solid wall, cavity wall or loft insulation)
- Heating
- Draught-proofing
- Double glazing
- Renewable energy generation (solar panels, heat pumps etc)
For example, a Britmet customer looking to convert their glass or polycarbonate conservatory roof would want to insulate the roof to lower their u-value as much as possible. Average cost for this depends on size and roof style however we estimate that it would cost around £1,800 – however under this new scheme the client would only pay 1/3 of the price while the government would contribute 2/3 of the cost.
Full details of the government scheme are still being confirmed however it is known that a wide range of energy-saving home improvements will be included within the scheme. Confirmation that insulation, energy efficient windows and doors are included in this scheme was implied by business secretary, Alok Sharma; “lowers bills for households, hundreds of pounds off energy bills every year, it’s supporting jobs and is very good news for the environment.”
So far, we know homeowners will be expected to use accredited installers and ensure that their project is covered under the scheme and eligible for a voucher before any work is undertaken.
Improved insulation within a property could help homeowners save up to £600 a year on energy bills. 1000’s of people with receive vouchers of up to £10,000 from the governments Green Homes Grant. It’s estimated that this scheme will help “kick-start our economy” by creating thousands of jobs and populating more business for existing skilled workers. Finally, how can installers join the scheme? Homeowners will have to use accredited local suppliers to receive quotes from for all of the energy-saving home improvements they are looking to have done. Installers will need to be approved by the governments scheme with evaluations and assessment. Find out more about green deal companies here.
