The Cost of Rogue Tradesmen

According to research from TrustMark, incompetent tradespeople have cost homeowners in the UK just under £2 billion in the last 12 months; five times the value of domestic burglary claims during the same timeframe.

Of the approximately 18 million homeowners who have employed roofers, renderers, plumbers, patio contractors, 17% have had to fix the work at an average cost of £600.

The survey shows that a million homeowners (6%) selected tradespeople based on the lowest price. Interestingly, 84% of tradespeople claim this was why so many homeowners received a poor standard of workmanship.

Approximately 57% of UK homeowners failed to check the qualifications of those hired to work on their homes in the last year. Despite this, a lack of technical skill was cited as the most common problem tradespeople come across when they are called upon to fix botched jobs (91%), as well as being the most expensive to repair.

In response to these findings, TrustMark has joined forces with consumer minister Jenny Willotts to launch a new set of standards for tradespeople. These will help UK homeowners find reliable tradesmen who have been rigorously tested by experts.
